Advanced Medical Neuroscience Summit

The Advanced Medical Neuroscience Summit is a first-of-its-kind program that allows motivated high school students to have an apprenticeship with world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. James Giordano.

Dr. Giordano is the chief of Georgetown University's Neuroethics Studies Program, the Co-director of the O’Neill-Pellegrino Program in Brain Science and Global Health Law at the Georgetown University Medical Center, and Co-executive Director for the Center for Policy on Emerging Technology.

In this accelerated apprenticeship, students will spend fourteen days participating in cutting-edge neuroscience experiments that explore the biological foundations of the brain, progressing from the cellular foundations of the neuron to an understanding of the sensory systems, and culminating with higher-order cognitive functions such as memory, emotion, and morality.

For their final project, students will design and propose an experiment related to cognitive neuroscience and neuroethics in order to focus and apply their understanding. Participants will present these proposed

experiments publicly to leading Neuroscientists, with the top teams being asked to write a paper we will publish on their theories.

Apprentices will have the rare opportunity to participate in neurological tests, meet with individuals with neurological disorders, and military veterans with cybernetic enhancements. The goal is for participants to gain a significant understanding of neurophysiology and complex neuro-interfaces - all online.

In Seven Fields Of Neurology

Students will participate in hands-on activities at the Georgetown Brain Bank, Georgetown University’s Laboratory for Relational Cognition, The Petitto Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging, and theCenter for Functional and Molecular Imaging.

Students will learn to use the current tools and techniques that neuroscience experts have adopted in their field research and patient treatments.

Students will have the opportunity to interact with military veterans with cybernetic enhancements and prosthetics designed to replace missing limbs and repair neurological impairments.

Students will learn from patients how neurological implants and cybernetic prosthetics are used in their everyday lives. The goal is to foster a greater understanding of where the neuroscience of prosthetics is and where its future will lead.

Students will work directly with doctors and medical experts from Georgetown University, Gallaudet University and Walter Reed Hospital in the fields of neuroethics, neuroimaging, brain stimulation, and neurotechnology.

Students will walk away from the program with direct experience and knowledge in the medical field with specific training on the brain structure and functions of the nervous system.

Military veterans who have been injured in combat have faced extraordinary obstacles when re-entering society. Advanced prosthetics and the ever-expanding capabilities of bio-engineering are creating new iterations of brain-machine interfaces, as well as neurally-modeled machines that hope to alleviate these issues.

Students will see how modern prosthetics are combining biomedical engineering with neuroscience to assist amputees. Students will learn how people can regain sensation and mobility with new technologies.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with patients with hearing, motor, and neurological impairments. The students will gain a greater understanding of how neurochemistry affects the patient's everyday life.

Students will see the practical applications doctors use to alleviate or overcome issues the patients are facing.

James Giordano, PhD, MPhil, is Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Biochemistry, Chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, and Co-director of the O'Neill-Pellegrino Program in Brain Science and Global Health Law and Policy at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA. He is also Distinguished Visiting Professor of Brain Science, Health Promotions and Ethics at the Coburg University of Applied Sciences, Coburg, Germany, and was formerly 2011-2012 JW Fulbright Foundation Visiting Professor of Neurosciences and Neuroethics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany.

Dr. Giordano currently serves an appointed member of United States Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Council on Human Research Protections (SACHRP), is a Researcher and Task Leader of the European Union Human Brain Project; and has served as an appointed member of the Neuroethics, Legal and Social Issues (NELSI) Advisory Panel of the Defense Advanced Research Projects’ Agency (DARPA), and Senior Science Advisory Fellow of the Strategic Multilayer Assessment Branch of the Joint Staff of the Pentagon.

The author of over 260 publications in neuroscience and neuroethics, 7 books, and 13 government whitepapers on neurotechnology, ethics and biosecurity, he is an Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Philosophy, Ethics and Humanities in Medicine; and Associate Editor of the Cambridge Quarterly of Health Care Ethics. His ongoing research addresses the neurobiological bases of neuropsychiatric spectrum disorders; and neuroethical issues arising in and from the development, use and misuse of neuroscientific techniques and neurotechnologies in medicine, public life, global health, and military applications. In recognition of his work, he was elected to membership in the European Academy of Science and Arts.

Rachel Wurzman PhD is a Fellow with the Center for Neuroscience and Society and Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Neurology with the Laboratory for Cognition and Neural Stimulation at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Dr. Wurzman previously served as an Intern in the Science Division of the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President of the United States, and an independent contractor for the World Technology Evaluation Center in support of the National Nanotechnology Coordinating Center. She was a contributing author in two white papers for the Joint Staff on applications of cognitive neuroscience for national defense and intelligence. Her current research investigates mechanisms of neuro-plasticity in brain networks, and addresses neuroethical issues arising from the use of neuroscience in national security, intelligence, and defense.

Adam joined the Georgetown faculty in the fall of 2010. Adam's motivating interest is in human creative intelligence and especially in understanding how neural processes constitute our best ideas. Adam’s work includes research into endogenous neural mechanisms and exogenous neurostimulation that support creative relational reasoning, as well as research on the neuroscience of teaching and learning in real-world educational contexts. He is a founder and current president (2019-2021) of The Society for the Neuroscience of Creativity. Adam received a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Dartmouth and did his post-doctoral training at Yale.

Dr. Ullman is Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, with secondary appointments in the Departments of Psychology and Neurology. He is Director of the Brain and Language Lab, and Director of the Georgetown EEG/ERP Laboratory.

The Brain and Language Lab aims to elucidate how language is learned, represented, and processed in the mind and brain.  We focus especially on understanding how language learning and use depend on evolutionarily ancient learning and memory systems in the brain: declarative memory and procedural memory, which are respectively rooted in the hippocampus and the basal ganglia. We study both native and later-learned language/bilingualism. We are also interested in the neurocognition of math, reading, and music, and whether and how these also depend on the two learning and memory systems. We investigate between and within subject differences in the neurocognition of language and other domains, based on factors such as genetic variation, endocrine fluctuations, sex and handedness differences, and individual differences in learning and memory abilities. We test our hypotheses using a set of complementary behavioral, neurological, neuroimaging ((f)MRI), electrophysiological (ERPs), and other approaches (e.g., genetic, endocrine, pharmacological). We are interested in the normal acquisition and processing of language and other domains, as well as the breakdown, recovery and rehabilitation of these processes in a variety of developmental and later-onset disorders, including Developmental Language Disorder (i.e., Specific Language Impairment), dyslexia, autism, Tourette syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and aphasia. A new area of research investigates how language and other cognitive abilities are affected in the aging brain. This work is being led by Research Scholar Jana Reifegerste, with the close involvement and support of undergraduates Lauren Russell and Walid Khan, as well as Denas Kisonas, an Integrative Neuroscience Masters Student in our lab in 2019-2020.

The Georgetown EEG/ERP Laboratory provides a state-of-the-art facility for the acquisition of human electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs). The lab’s Neuroscan SynAmps2 EEG/ERP system can be used for up to 64-channel EEG/ERP acquisition. Additionally, we have a 64 channel BrainAmp MR Plus system from Brain Products that allows one to carry out simultaneous EEG/ERP and fMRI acquisition in Georgetown’s Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging (CFMI) 3T Siemens Magnetom Trio scanner.

Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto is a Cognitive Neuroscientist and a Developmental Cognitive Neuroscientist widely known for her discoveries about the biological foundations of language. She has uncovered key brain structures underlying early human language processing and, with brain imaging technology called functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), she has tracked the typical and atypical development of these brain structures across the human lifespan (infants through adults; Scientific Contributions).

Presently, Dr. Petitto is the Science Director and Co-Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). She is also the Scientific Director of The Brain and Language Laboratory for Neuroimaging (BL2).

Dr. Petitto is known for her work on the biological bases of language, especially involving early language acquisition. Her studies on this topic span 30 years, beginning in 1973 with her research at Columbia University in which she found that attempts to teach sign language to a baby chimpanzee were not successful and unlike language acquisition in humans (“Project Nim Chimpsky”). She is presently known for her discoveries concerning how young human children acquire language, be it spoken or signed, and she has also probed the neural basis of language in the brain of adults using modern PET, MRI, fMRI, and functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) brain-imaging techniques. Taken together, her research points to the existence of select tissue in the human brain that helps young babies learn language, for example, the Superior Temporal Gyrus (STG)—tissue vital for young babies’ phonological segmentation of the linguistic stream around them. Taken together, the major contribution of Petitto’s scientific writings have been to offer both testable hypotheses and theory regarding the neural basis for the brain’s specialization for human language (be it signed or spoken), how it is possible for very young babies to acquire language, and the translational means by which we can take the fruits of this research and apply it to the education and betterment of children’s lives.

He is also an instructor of science education for the ‘Science and the Public’ EdM online program at the University at Buffalo. In recent years he has been Adjunct Instructor in Philosophy and Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia; and Associate Fellow at the Center for Neurotechnology Studies in the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies in Arlington, Virginia. Since 2015 he has contributed research for the US Department of Defense (DoD) Strategic Multilayer Assessment (SMA) program. At Georgetown University, he works with James Giordano of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, and has mentored students in its Medical Ethics course. Ed Meyertholen went to Boston College where he graduated with a Biology/Chemistry major. He then attended graduate school at Purdue University and received his Ph.D. in biology in 1982. After holding faculty positions at several universities he settled in Austin, TX where he taught Cell and Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Physiology at Austin Community College. In 2005, Ed was awarded a sabbatical leave and was able to do research on Kennedy's Disease in the lab of Dr. Diane Merry at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In 2012, Ed accepted a position as Assistant Dean and Director of Pre-Health Programs at Georgetown College, Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Ed is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the KDA. Ed and his wife, Pat, have been married for 30 years and have two daughters. Ed was diagnosed with KD in 1999 when he was 45. Since having been diagnosed, he has taken up running and has completed five marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2004. Ed has tried to use his running as a means of raising money for the KDA.

The highlight of my experience was when we were able to meet patients with a deep brain stimulation, or DBS. A patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease talked about his life before his DBS was placed and after it was implanted. With the help of his DBS, he was able to regain movement after suffering from the disease for many years. Once he turned off his DBS in front of the students, he lost almost all movement in his arms and legs. The entire room was in shock at how his range of motion was lessened to almost nothing. This experience not only showed me how important this technology is to save lives, but how I could help people like him in the future. I also loved traveling to Gallaudet University's Pettito Brain Lab.

All summer participants are able to submit up to five college application essays for review by our partners at University Connection. University Connection employs college writing professors and admissions experts to help students craft the best essay possible for their college applications.

Each student essay will be edited to ensure it makes an excellent impression at every stage of the competitive application process. The editors will improve the style, clarity, sentence structure and coherence of your application so that your achievements are noticed.

To ensure language errors do not keep students from achieving their ambitions, every section of your university application will be carefully proofread to eliminate any mistakes in grammar, punctuation, spelling and more.

Editors bring their experience in many different backgrounds, including Science and Technology, Commerce, Management, and the Humanities.

College Essay Review Service

Students who participate in any of Leadership Initiatives Youth Development Programs will have the opportunity to have two letters of recommendation written for them from any Leadership Initiatives staff member, including the Executive Director Marshall Bailly.

Students that participated in the International Leadership and Business Summit can ask for letters of recommendation from their business partner or translator. Students of the Advanced Law and Trial Summit can request letters from the programs directors or lawyers they are interning with for letters of recommendation.

Students of the Advanced Medical and Public Health Summit can ask the patients they diagnose or the doctors they work with for letters of recommendation. Students receive glowing and personal letters of recommendation from individuals whose lives they impacted and professionals they have partnered with.

Letters Of Recommendation

Students will receive customized web pages based on which program they attend.

web pages include a portfolio that outlines the real court case each student

worked on, showcasing their actual internship with Goodwin Weber PLLC and their work advocating for clients on Capitol Hill.

Law Program

web pages showcase the student's internship with a business in the

developing world and their solution development presentation to members of the United Nations, Harvard's University Admissions Panel, and the US Pentagon.

Business Program

web pages include a full video of each student diagnosing a real patient

in the developing world using VR technology, the CPR, AED, and First Aid certification awarded by the Red Cross of America, and each student's work at the Howard University Medical Simulation Center.

Medical Program

A link to the website will be included in each student's personal letter of recommendation, allowing colleges to discover firsthand the once-in-a-lifetime experience each student has had alongside Leadership Initiatives.

Leadership Initiatives has partnered with top universities around the country to form a panel of college admissions officers to provide students with a firsthand account on how universities select their incoming students.

Students attend an exclusive Question and Answer Session with College Admissions Officers from Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, George Washington, and American University. These experts will discuss the basics of filling out your application, content for inclusion and exclusion, what activities stand out the most in student applications, and techniques to write a memorable application essay.

Participants in each program attend a specific graduate-level admissions panel to plan ahead to Law School, Medical School, and Business School.

No other program in the country offers pre-professional school advice directly from admissions officers, allowing students to plan ahead to their future careers and shape their path to success.

Elite College Admissions Panels

Leadership Initiatives partners summer program students with a US-based mentor of their choice from the Leadership Initiatives community of supporters.

Potential mentorship partners include executives at some of the Country’s most successful businesses, top legal experts in Washington, D.C., Harvard Staff and Faculty, former State Department officials, Georgetown University Professors, NASA scientists, Federal Law Enforcement Officers, and more.

Over the course of 18 months, these mentors work with students to help navigate the way to their future colleges and careers.

Students receive the perceptive, wisdom, and life advice from these highly successful mentors to aid in their transition to college and their career beyond.

Career Mentorship Program

Leadership Initiatives has worked with high school seniors and current undergraduates to apply for scholarships for over two decades. Seniors who utilize our scholarship assistance program to apply for 12 scholarships, that we approve and professionally edit have a 38% chance of receiving a scholarship of at least $500 up to $62,000.

In 2020, Leadership Initiatives scholarship assistance program helped students to receive over $6.92 million dollars in financial aid for all four years of college.

Scholarship Application Assistance

Current college students know first hand the best and worst qualities of their respective university, as well as the time-consuming and often stressful application process. Leadership Initiatives pairs summer program students with current college students from the school of their choice to get the most personal and authentic image of their dream school.

Students will have one-on-one calls with their college mentor to answer any questions, discuss the qualities of the college, and receive advice on the application process. LI has past students and current interns at the nations top colleges, as well as access to students at nearly every US college. These calls act as an exceptional resource during the college-decision period of every student’s life.

Summer program students also have the opportunity to network with past participants, who attend the nation's foremost universities, received internships at the UN, with US congressional officials, and many leading businesses nationwide.

These leaders will share the steps they took to achieve these goals and offer advice for your own personal journey into the university and career of your choosing.
